This is quite an interesting exhibit: it is the result of an
accurate research on the paintings of a historical period that was long neglected as far as the Venetian artistic panorama is concerned.
Pietro Bellotti was born in
Brescia in 1625 (exactly 400 years ago), but worked for a long time in Venice.
The Accademia Galleries have recently
purchased two of his paintings, “
Self Portrait as the Allegory of Amazement” and “
Peasants in the Open Air”, which are presented respectively at the beginning and at the end of this exhibition.
In between, we can admire a
series of other paintings by Bellotti in an ideal dialogue with the works of art of other masters of that period, such as Ribera and Giordano.
Great emphasis is given to the technique, the
realism, the themes and subjects represented in these masterpieces.
