Septembre 1st, 2019: Regata Storica
Every year in Venice, on the
first Sunday in September, the famous
Historical Regatta takes place. The date this year will be
September 1st.
Traditional boats such as mascarete, caorline, pupparini, gondolini will race during this competition, which is the most important such event in the Venetian Lagoon. There will be different races, depending on the kind of boats and on the sex and the age of the participants.
From a historical point of view we do not exactly know when this Regatta was held for the first time, but we find records about it dating back to the
13th century.
In the ‘50s of the 20th century it was decided to open this competition with a
historical parade, as to celebrate the moment when
Caterina Cornaro, the Queen of Cyprus, came back to Venice in 1489: a procession of boats, richly decorated as to remind of the 1500s boats, float along the Grand Canal.
Among them, the best decorated is the one that hosts the
Doge, the Dogaressa and Caterina Cornaro, together with the most outstanding representatives of the Republic. It is like jumping back into the past of the Venetian Republic, to celebrate its History and its rowing tradition.
