Venice: a Painting by Tiepolo on Loan at the Accademia Galleries

From October 11th, 2022 to February 26th, 2023 The City Museum of Bassano del Grappa has recently given on loan to the Accademia Galleries in Venice a painting by the great master of the 1700’s Giambattista Tiepolo. It represents “Christ’s Circumcision”. This little canvas has been placed on the same spot where another work by the same artist’s normally hangs, which is itself at present time on loan at the City Museum of Bassano.
The painting is quite small, it might even look like a preparatory sketch for a larger work that was never done, and it probably dates back to the 30’s of the 18th century.
The brush strokes are quick and apparently inaccurate. The voluminous drapery, the bright colors of some of the clothes, the light blue sky and the vibrant light are all characteristics of Tiepolo’s style.
